When do the Labor Day sales start?
Like other shopping-friendly holidays, Labor Day is marked by sales that tend to start about two weeks earlier than the day itself. For example, last year Labor Day fell on September 5th, but the first sale we saw appeared on August 18th. We expect a similar schedule in 2023. The first sale will begin in mid-August at the latest.

If you’re wondering what the first Labor Day sales include, the truth is that they can vary. In 2020, the first sale we saw was from Omaha Steaks, which offered up to 45% off grill kits, along with two free pounds of ground beef. And Free shipping on orders over $159. In 2021, the first event we caught was Louise’s Labor Day sale. The savings have been applied site-wide to everything from appliances and furniture to decorative and bathroom fixtures. And last year, the first event we listed was from Raymour & Flanigan, which has up to 40% off mattresses, furniture, and décor, among other things.
How long do the Labor Day sales last?
Labor Day sales often run until the end of Labor Day itself or the following day. However, there are always retailers who run their events well into the weekend, if not longer. It’s kind of sloppy, so check your favorite stores’ events to see how long you have to shop.

What should you buy from the Labor Day Sale in 2023?
Labor Day sales can be huge events, and that can make shopping overwhelming. But not every discounted product is worth buying. If you want to simplify your strategy, plan to focus on the following categories when shopping for the Labor Day Sale in 2023:

Save up to 70% during the Labor Day clothing sale
Labor Day is an excellent opportunity to shop for warm-weather clothing, as many retailers try to get rid of the rest of their summer inventory by offering deep discounts. It’s a good time to look for outdoorsy companies like REI, which last year took up to 50% off but also up to 70% off men’s clothing, specifically. Meanwhile, Eddie Bauer has a 50% discount during the Labor Day Sale. So if you want outerwear for summer weather, these types of sales are perfect for stocking up.
It’s not just outerwear that goes on sale either. Stores that sell lots of other types of clothing celebrate, too. For example, last year several retailers offered discounts of up to 50%, including Target, Nike, and Cole Haan, while others offered up to 70% off. Look for Tommy Hilfiger and Macy’s to offer that much discount again this year.

Shop Mattresses Up To 70% Off

Save up to 70% on mattresses during the Labor Day sale, and expect deals to include hundreds of dollars’ worth of accessories for free.
For example, Macy’s had up to 70% off mattresses and other home items during the event, while Amazon discounted select Serta mattresses at up to 32% off and 20% off Tuft & Needle beds. Wayfair, meanwhile, had mattresses starting at $170. All in all, we’ve seen twin mattresses for as little as $58.
Historically, we’ve seen retailers include bundles of accessories for free with certain purchases. Pay attention to things like the pillows that come with your new bed at no extra charge. Some stores may offer additional savings in the form of instant credits, so shop before you buy.
Get the grill for only $30
With summer essentially closing in on Labor Day — even if it’s not officially — summer items should see deep discounts as retailers try to get them off the shelves. Grills are one of these types of products, and stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot would be great places to look for them, although they aren’t your only options. On Labor Day last year, Amazon offered a portable charcoal grill and smoker for just $30, while Ace Hardware had an electric grill for $130. We also saw Char-Griller Akorn Jr. Kamado Charcoal Grill, $139.
Expect a lot of sales to lose, too. Last year, ZGrills took up to $361 off its Labor Day sale, while Home Depot took up to $70 off select grills and smokers.
Save up to 40% or more during hardware sales
Major appliances usually see discounts of 30% to 40% depending on the holiday, though retailers sometimes offer higher discounts. In the past year, stores have stuck with this trend. For example, Samsung has up to 35% off select laundry appliances on sale, while Home Depot has up to 63% off appliances from various brands. Plus, Wayfair had hardware deals starting at $199.

Keep an eye out for Best Buy to offer savings on hardware, too. In the past, it’s been offering Labor Day discounts on all the major brands, including Samsung, LG, GE, Whirlpool, and more.
Get patio furniture at 80% off.
With warmer weather just around the corner, it’s time to upgrade your backyard setup. Like other seasonal items, patio furniture is one of those products that are best to buy when you don’t need it. Fortunately, if you are Do Buy it during the Labor Day sale, you might actually have a few more weeks of warm weather to use it up before it gets too cold.
Think outside the box when it comes to yard sales. For example, Kohl’s usually offers generous discounts. Last year, it grabbed up to 60% off a variety of patio furniture and purchases that qualified for Kohl’s Cash, too. However, the best sale may come from Macy’s, which offered up to 80% off dining sets, sofas, fire pits, umbrellas, tables, benches, and other outdoor furniture in 2022.
Aside from sales, find great singles deals. In 2022, for example, we saw stackable patio chairs for $14, “zero gravity” lounge chairs from $38, and storage tables for $54.
Do you want to enjoy your patio even with cooler temperatures? Also keep an eye out for heating elements that are on sale. Last year we saw wood burning pits for under $18 and patio heaters for $69 at Walmart.
Don’t be surprised if travel deals are rare
Many people are passionate about traveling in an effort to capture the waning days of summer. But that doesn’t mean deals exist. Demand remains strong, so airlines, hotels and cruise lines may not have much reason to offer incentives to entice travelers. It should still be there some Labor Day travel deals, though—may not be as good as the historic savings.
Find summer items like grills under $30, and patio furniture up to 80% off.
Some of the best deals we saw around Labor Day last year included hotel stays in Las Vegas from $23 per night, hotel rates in Myrtle Beach from $59 per night, and stays at a mountain resort near Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks from $65 per night.
We also saw a 4-night all-inclusive stay at a resort in the Dominican Republic for $320 and a 7-day cruise for two in Canada and New England for $998. Keep an eye on the broad sales as well. Last year, Groupon offered up to 81% off “last-minute travel deals.”
If none of the travel deals sound appealing, consider using Labor Day as an excuse to pick up new luggage. Last year, Kohl’s offered up to 60% off baggage plus an additional 20% off, And She gave Kohl’s Cash. Macy’s and Belk also took up to 60% off select pieces of luggage, and Samsonite offered deals starting at $100 on a choose-your-own sale.
